Crazy Weekend

I'm chilling out on our couch watching reruns of "Scrubs" on Comedy Central... awesome. I needed to relax after the rollercoaster joys and sorrows of this past weekend (mostly joys).

Joy:
-Finishing Harry Potter. Yessssss!

Biggest Joy of Weekend:
-Rachel and Joel, friends from college, got married in a lovely heartwarming ceremony with a kickass reception.

Sorrow:
-waking up the morning of the wedding with awful abdominal cramps of unknown origin

Joy:
-said abdominal cramps resolving

Sorrow:
-having my plane flight home Sunday night cancelled and having to stay in a hotel in Hartford

Joy:
-said hotel having HBO, so I could watch Entourage and Flight of the Conchords.

Nornie Win the Game!

I had a great birthday today, the big 2-6. I went to Bongo with my best friends from med school and it was a gorgeous evening. We hadn't all gotten together to hang out since fourth year started. To top it all off, I relaxed and digested with the latest Harry Potter for an hour or two. Man, that book has its own momentum... a couple times I thought, I should stop and do something else, but I kept getting hooked, much like a Portkey, right back into the book. (What a cornball I am.)

Sweet Anticipation

My dad picked up my pre-ordered copy of the new Harry Potter book. It's waiting for me at my parents' house. Naturally, I'll be heading out there early tomorrow to run my hands over it. I actually have a lot of work to do tomorrow; I have to make a presentation for Monday morning, and finally take a look at the comments my friends and family made on my personal statement, polish that up, and email that to the doctor writing my dean's letter. (Oh, that reminds me, I also need to revise my resume and send that along to the doc as well.)

So yeah, I'll go drool over it tomorrow, but it won't be until tomorrow night, after I've snuggled into bed, that I'll allow myself to start reading. Oh baby.

In a related story, I went with Jaime, Diane, and Dave to see the new Harry Potter movie tonight. I loved it! I think it's the best movie so far, which as Diane pointed out, is ironic since the book wasn't one of the better ones. I just liked the pacing, the lighting, the flying (for some reason them flying over modern-day London excited me greatly), and especially the writing. Unlike the other movies, this movie didn't contain everything the book did, so the plot unfolded naturally.

And to put a good end on this good day, the Phils are winning 7-4 right now.

My Latest Drug

Each night at 9pm, Amy and I gather round the TV to watch VH1's "World Series of Pop Culture." Our favorite team is "Three Men and a Little Lazy." As we say EVERY night, Amy NEEDS to be on this show. Her pop knowledge is freaky-deaky. I have a cursory knowledge of pop, but Amy's Rain Man.

Silly Third Years, Trix Are For Kids

This is what's nice about having a mostly anonymous blog now; I don't need to worry about third years finding this and getting hurt. But basically I supervised a third year med student today while she did an annual exam (which includes a psych, social, substance use, and medical history as well as a physical exam), and I realized how much I've learned in the past year. She interrupted him sometimes and forgot details of his history and most noticeably, asked too much about unimportant details and didn't follow up aggressively enough on parts of the patient's history that needed further explaining. I remember not knowing what was important and what wasn't, and it feels good to have a bit better sense of how to do this whole medicine thing.

Love the Loonies

Just posting to say I'm loving my psychiatry outpatient sub-internship. We're kept busy all day, but there are enough of us so that it's not harried, and there's still a few minutes here and there to read articles or socialize. w00t!

Ridin' the Waves

I've still been feeling glum and anxious about this whole process of applying for residencies. Also, this takes my mind off the psych outpatient sub-I I've been doing, and that makes me worry that I won't get a good evaluation or letter of recommendation from it. Sigh. I'll be glad when September is finished and I only have to worry about choosing a program.

Yeeeeeehaw!

Tonight I went to a rodeo with my high school friend CC, her girlfriend Caroline, another high school friend Karina, and my roommate Amy. It was a gorgeous evening, and the sun set over the dirt yard as the events went on. We ate Wawa hoagies and drank beer. We watched men ride steers and broncos and wrestle and rope steers. (We also watched women ride their horses around cones -- apparently they're too delicate to jump on steers). It was great to sit there and talk about various important issues, like the upcoming Fringe Festival, who's going to be next to get married within our circle, and whether Ian McShane played Al Swearingen on Deadwood. (I won $5 from Karina that way, but she didn't have it, so she promised to buy me a drink sometime.)

I'm a Nutter, I Am

I saw a psychiatrist today, for the first time, in my med school psych department. He only sees medical students, I hear. It was really helpful for me to sort out my anxiety about the residency application process, and in the midst of my distress, I was able to also observe what it's like to be a patient seeing a psychiatrist. Useful for a wannabe.

(Also, I fell in love with him a tiny bit.)

Oh Yeah, My Blog

Sorry for the hiatus, and I can't post much now -- but to tide you over, here's a photo of me as the devil, from when I was in Maine with my family and friends:
